This is a wiki (editable web page) to organise cooking for this weekend’s trip to the Bury Jubilee Hostel in Glenridding.
The kitchen is equipped with a large gas cooker, fridges, freezer, and all utensils and crockery.
Click edit at the top to change the text (you’ll need to be logged in to your account on the website first – click here to register if you don’t have one). You can either suggest a meal idea or join one of the existing ones and you’re obviously also welcome to sort yourself out (move your name to Independent). Please remove your name from the Not yet signed-up for meal list too once you’re in a group or have decided to cook alone. The person who suggests the meal is responsible for arranging the ingredients – everyone else in the group should bring money on the trip to pay for their share, and expect to help with the preparation and washing up.
Timetable
Meal suggestions by Tuesday evening. Finalise groups by Wednesday evening so the person suggesting the meal knows how much they have to buy and has a couple of days to do the shopping.
Meal 1
- Starter: None :(
- Main: Pasta Salad - wholewheat fusilli (recently changed from spelt in order to keep the cost down. If you require spelt for medical reasons, please inform me ASAP and I can try to get some on the way up) with diced cucumber and red pepper, along with pesto sauce because I love pesto. Complete with a sprinkling of roasted cashew nuts (this could be optional, just let me know if you don’t want any). Vegetarian friendly.
Dessert: None planned, but if people specifically request I could make a fruit salad.
Maximum number: No maximum
Cost per person: Probably less than £3 (but +£2 per person if fruit salad is requested). I will confirm once I know numbers. Update: cost is £6.70 total.

Meal 2
- Starter: None
- Main: Spaghetti Bolognaise - including mushrooms and green peppers. I prefer brown spaghetti, but am happy to do a mix of brown and white if popular preference demands it.
Dessert: None.
Maximum number: Depends on the size of saucepans, but I imagine any reasonably sized saucepan could do up to 12 at a time, but we could do multiple batches.
- Cost per person: Based on BBC Good Food's estimate, about £2.95/person, but I intend to get ingredients from the local mini-market in Glenriddig, so it may amount to slightly more if certain ingredients are more expensive.
If anyone who is driving can pick up some ingredients in Penrith on the way, it would be much appreciated. I can take pasta and vegetables, but the beef mince can not stay in the car for 4 hours at room temperature, so our only alternative is to get supplies from Glenridding which may prove problematic if the walk overruns. Please confirm as soon as possible and I will give you a list. Thanks.

Shopping list: 750g 5% fat beef mince 2 medium sized green peppers 500 - 600g mushrooms 2 medium sized carrots (about 0.5kg in total) 3 400g tins tomatoes Celery sticks (only 2 needed but you usually have to get a larger quantity) 2 medium sized yellow/white onions (approx 250g i think.) 500g white spaghetti (I personally prefer brown but I know it's divisive so I'll go for white.)
I believe cooking oil is provided, and I'll take my own herbs, salt, garlic powder and pepper. Please text me on 07538972561 as soon as possible to acknowledge receipt of this. Many thanks. I have now bought all these ingredients except the beef and I'm one tin of tomatoes short, so those are all you need to get. Please let me know by tomorrow morning whether or not you've already bought them, otherwise I will assume you haven't already bought them and will take them to avoid shortages. If you have, don't worry, I'll just keep the ingredients for my personal use. Many thanks.
(Very) Low Carb Meal (need a driver willing to stop on the way though as I won't have time to buy things beforehand)
- I'll basically just make this for myself as I am on a medical diet, but anyone is welcome to join if they are not put off by the thought. ;)
- Starter: Avocado Tuna Bites
- Main: Savoy Cabbage 'Lasagne'

Toffee apples
With the trip basically coinciding with Halloween, anyone fancy toffee apples? On me, since the cost of ingredients is negligible- just put your name down so I know how much to get.
