Transport arrangements for Coniston 2018

This wiki page is intended to help coordinate lift sharing to and from the club's Winter Vacation Trip to the Barrow Ski and Mountaineering club cottage in the Lake District from Thursday 4th January until Monday 8th. This page is editable by anyone with an account on the club website — please go here to register if you don't have already have one. That said, please sign up to the trip (by filling out the webform or emailing the President) before adding your name here!

Hut location

See a map here. The bunkhouse is by the NW of the two Youth Hostels shown on the map.

Getting to the hut using public transport

  • Fast trains link Lancaster with London, Manchester, Preston and Scotland, slower trains also head East towards Leeds etc..
  • From Lancaster, you can get a train towards Barrow, get off at Ulverston.
  • Stagecoach run a decent service from Ulverston up to Coniston, and you'll then need to walk the last bit up the hill to the bunkhouse.
  • For exact journey times, try using the Traveline website's journey planner.

  • It's unlikely anyone will be coming from exactly the same bit of the north east, but I'll be driving past Darlington and Penrith on the A66 and I'm happy to pick up from those stations. It'll be setting off from home on Thursday evening, 5pm ish, so would anticipate being at Darlington for ~6pm and Penrith ~7pm.

  • I have an (ahem) important meeting on Monday so I'll be coming back Sunday evening (after a walk if it's good weather)
  • 3 nights (Thu, Fri, Sat)
  • Car from Cambridge and back (can pick up/drop off on the way if it's close to either A1-Scotch-Corner route or M6 route - please check with me)
  • I'll arrange pick-up details with everyone nearer the time

  • Car from Cambridge and back (can pick up/drop off en route- opposite route to Paul?)

  • I'll probably leave Cambridge at around midday Thursday, maybe a little earlier, to avoid traffic. Flexible timing for departure on Monday.
